Show Me Tell Me is the name given to the technical / safety questions asked by a driving examiner in the Uk practical driving test. This element of the practical test was first introduced in September 2003, and the question bank was amended in July 2008.
On your driving test you will be asked one ‘show me’ question and one ‘tell me’ question at the start of the test, after the eyesight test, but before starting the engine.
The ‘show me’ question will require you to physically do something such as sound the car’s horn or to point to something such as the engine oil dipstick and describe a procedure under the bonnet. The ‘tell me’ question will be purely verbal.
You cannot fail your practical driving test for getting one or both questions wrong, but you can pick up 1 minor driving fault as a result of one or two incorrect answers. 16 or more minor driving faults, or one serious or one dangerous fault will result in a test failure.
Are you ready?
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Apply the hazard warning switch and check correct functioning of all indicators by walking around car.
STell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Press foot brake pedal few times, if it feels firm the brake should be OK. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack or goes to the floor. Brakes may be tested also as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Identify reservoir (first on the left-hand side of engine on Focus, look for spraying logo on blue cap) and explain how to check level (In Ford focus low screen wash level is displayed on the dashboard while the ignition is on or push end button in on right hand side control arm to activate. Pull stalk towards you and it will wash and wipe the rear windscreen.
Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Put keys in the ignition and click on twice (switch the ignition on to turn on electrics only). Press the brake pedal. Make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to assist you and ask how many lights can be seen.
Show me / explain how you would check that the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Slightly turn the steering wheel in both directions; maintain this while the engine is started. You should feel a slight but noticeable movement on the wheel as the system begins to operate (steering should be light and responsive).. If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Check it in on the label placed on the driver door frame or in manufacturer’s guide. Remove valve caps, and use a reliable pressure gauge to check pressures when tyres are cold. Adjust (pump up) if necessary. Don’t forget the spare tyre (in the boot), and remember to refit valve caps.
Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear
Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle. Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully applied it secures the car, and is not at the end of the working travel. (Ease off footbrake whilst handbrake is on. The car should hold still on a slight gradient).
Open the bonnet. Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil
Open the bonnet (look just in in the middle for the bright yellow dip stick handle). Identify dipstick (yellow ring on top) remove dipstick and wipe clean. Replace dipstick then remove again and check oil level against the minimum / maximum markers. Oil level should be checked when the engine is cold.
Open the bonnet. Identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Open the bonnet (with key). Identify reservoir ( the largest one on left hand side of engine). Identify minimum level marker, and only when cold remove cap and top up to correct level with water if necessary.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted (to lower it down you should use plastic button on the bottom of rest) so the top part of the head restraint is at least as high as the centre of your eye and top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Open the bonnet. Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid
Open the bonnet (with a key). Identify reservoir (left hand side of engine small reservoir with black cap with yellow print on top), check level against minimum / maximum markings.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts and bulges in tyre side walls and a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference (ie. all the way around the tyre).
Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only)
Press horn (in central part of steering wheel).
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Switch the ignition on to turn on electrics only. Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen by push end button in on right hand side control arm to activate. Pull stalk towards you for rear wash.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights (front of car) & tail lights (back of car) are working. (No need to exit vehicle)
Switch the ignition on to turn on electrics only. Operate switch by turning round the switch on dashboard (just below level of steering wheel, on right hand side) 2 clicks to the right, then check by walking around the vehicle
Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively. This should include both front and rear screens.
Press heated front windscreen demister button to ON (works only while engine is running) press the heated rear window button to ON for the rear (ignition has to be turned on). You may additionally set all relevant controls including: fan, temperature, air direction and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them
Switch the ignition on to turn on electrics only. Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary, then pull the switch two clicks towards you). Check yellow warning light is on dash board. Use only if visibility is less that 100 metres. Once turned on separates icons are switched on the dashboard, green for the front one and orange for the rear one.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
Warning light should illuminate on dashboard if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system. When you start the car the ABS light should come on then go off.
Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Operate switch, with ignition switched on, switch the lights to the dipped beam then pull left hand indicator control towards you, check that main beam (blue) warning light on dashboard is showing.
